Between Provence and Dauphiné, dominating the cluse where the Durance flows, the Citadel of Sisteron bars the sky, crowns the city with its enclosures, its bastions, its dungeon.
The view that we discover there is striking, over 150 km, it offers the most beautiful viewpoint of Haute Provence.
Listed historic monument, spanning 10 hectares, it carries eight centuries of architecture and history. Dungeon and covered way, built on the narrow rocky thorn, date from the 13th century, the arrangement of bastioned enclosures from the 16th century. Of the Vauban project, designed in 1692, only the powder magazine was built. Major changes were made to the north face in the middle of the 19th century. It was at this time that the magnificent underground staircase connecting the fortress to the city was dug into the rock.
